Drone Team

4-H’ers age 13 to 18 (as of Jan. 1) can compete in an indoor drone competition! Each participant will learn how to code, maneuver through obstacles, and problem-solve. Real-life scenarios are given to the 4-H’ers to mimic various careers that utilize drones.

This year our middle school team won 4th place at the state competition and our high school team won 2nd place! Practices are held at various times and days throughout the week to ensure that the youth are prepared. The competition is held end of April and practices will be held from February to April.

For more information concerning the drone team and how to join, or coach, please contact Toni Newby, 4-H Agent, at ttnewby@ncat.edu or at (910)874-6573.

4-H Forestry Team

The 4-H Forestry Contest helps develop appreciation for the importance of conserving forestland as a source of products, benefits, and services necessary for quality living. 4-H foresters learn practical forest management skills through participation in the 4-H Forestry contest. Learning these skills will help our leaders of tomorrow be prepared to own forestland or deal with environmental issues in the future. Events covered at the state contest include tree identification, tree measurement, insect and disease identification, and compass traverse.

Bladen County 4-H with the help of Matt Strickland, Row Crops Agent and Jacob Barber, Horticulture Agent helps to coach 4-H’ers in the events covered. If you are interested in joining the 4-H Forestry Team, please contact our office at (910)862-4591.

Youth Livestock Team

Our Youth Livestock Team with 4-H’ers aging from 8 to 18 (as of Jan. 1st) is coached and led by Becky Spearman, County Extension Director & Livestock Agent. Youth compete in a wide-variety of opportunities such as:

Livestock Skillathon

Poultry Judging

Livestock Judging

Each of these opportunities teach youth how to:

  1. Evaluate livestock based on knowledge and fact; make a decision and
    defend that decision
  2. Learn livestock terms which can be used in a logical systematic way to defend the placing.
  3. Gain confidence in your ability and use of the English language by giving oral
    reasons to a judge.
  4. Learn to speak clearly, decisively and convincingly through the use of oral reasons.

For more information on the Bladen County Youth Livestock opportunities, please contact Becky Spearman at becky_spearman@ncsu.edu.
