Learn, Grow, Eat, and Go! Online Program
Greetings from the Duplin Cooperative Extension Office! We are so excited you have decided to take this first-time virtual journey with us! If you have any questions along the way, our contacts are at the bottom of this page. The hotlinks below will also be available to you. Please register online to participate in the weekly Zoom meetings and to follow along with other youth. To participate you must be in first grade through fifth grade and a member of Duplin County 4-H Club. This registration will end by May 13th, 2020 or cut off at 20 participants.
Expectations: You can do as much, or as little of the activities as you wish! If you would like to receive a project completion prize, you will need to turn your Garden Journal into the Duplin Extension Office by June 30th.
Garden Journal: This online garden journal will be used throughout the lessons and so you can keep an accurate log of your garden’s progress.
Week 1
If you are doing your own garden at home, decide the type of garden (in-ground, raised bed, pots), where to put it, and what you want to plant. During week two we will have an activity to help you plant your seeds!
Discuss & complete the following for week one:

- Home Sweet Home
- Garden Planting Chart

- Know & Show Sombrero
Vegetable highlight of the week: Carrots

Week 2
*Supply List- Elmer’s glue, paper towel, carrot seeds (provided)
Discuss & complete the following:
- Food Label Sheet
- Paper Towel Gardening
- Discuss Plant Parts & Announce Food Drive
- Check out this short video by NC 4-H to learn more about the plant parts
- Garden Duties & Garden Duty Tracker
- “Walk Across Duplin” physical activity week two
- Make your own MyPlate after reviewing the website and infosheet.
Fruit highlight of the week: Strawberries and blueberries

Week 3
*Supply List- full-size bag fried potato chips, full-size bag baked potato chips, 2 1-gallon zip lock bags, 2 copies Greasy Grid Evaluation (provided)
Discuss & complete the following:
- Go, Slow, Whoa
- U R What You Eat
- Put the bags of potato chips into two separate zip lock bags with this Greasy Grid Evaluation to see which type of potato chips has less grease! Review using the food label.
- Nutritional Advertisement: Make an ad about your favorite healthy food and what food group it belongs in and why it is healthy for you!

Vegetable highlight of the week: Tomato
Recipe to try: Green Beans & Cherry Tomato Salad
Book: I Will Never, Not Ever, Eat a Tomato- Lauren Child
Week 4
*Supply List- Cotton Balls, Measuring Cup
Discuss & complete the following:
- Scavenger Hunt
- Cotton Ball Portion Size, use cotton balls to show each measurement size so we can understand portions better.
